A cold day calculator estimates how low temperature and wind chill add pressure to a school schedule. It cannot know a district's local threshold, so it shows extreme-cold pressure as part of the same transparent six-factor closure estimate.

How the cold-day estimate works

The model averages the forecast daily low and high, combines that temperature with maximum wind using the National Weather Service wind-chill formula when its conditions apply, and scores Temperature and Wind chill separately. Snow, possible ice, morning timing, area type and school level remain in the result so cold is never presented without context. Review every threshold in the published methodology.

Extreme cold can create a non-zero estimate even without falling snow. However, cold by itself does not automatically force the result into the highest band: local policy, transportation, student exposure and building readiness still matter, and the district remains the decision-maker.

How to check tomorrow's cold-day chance

  2. Select the area, school level and the district's usual weather tendency.
  3. Open tomorrow's result and compare the Temperature and Wind chill factor rows.
  4. Check the official cold alert for your country and local area.
  5. Use the result to prepare, then wait for the school's actual announcement.

Temperature is not the same as wind chill

Wind chill describes how cold the combination of air temperature and wind feels on exposed skin; it does not mean objects cool below the actual air temperature. The National Weather Service notes that dangerously low values can increase frostbite and hypothermia risk. Environment and Climate Change Canada also uses both temperature and wind chill in region-specific cold warnings. That regional variation is one reason this site does not publish a universal “school closes at X” rule.

The school level setting provides only a general sensitivity adjustment for bus-stop and travel exposure. Actual practices differ. Read why nearby systems can choose different outcomes in the regional differences guide, then use the family preparation checklist if a disruption looks possible.

What this page cannot determine

  • the district's local cold-weather rule or attendance policy;
  • the length of each student's outdoor wait or walk;
  • building heat, utility and transportation readiness;
  • whether individual bus routes are delayed or canceled;
  • whether the forecast will change before morning.
