How to read the map

Each dot is a city with a published calculator page, positioned by its real latitude and longitude. Colour shows which band the calculated probability falls into: low, watch, elevated or high. Size grows with forecast snowfall, so a large pale dot means snow is expected without much closure pressure, and a small dark dot means pressure is coming from something other than accumulation — usually cold, wind chill or the timing of a smaller amount.

That distinction is the reason this page exists. A snowfall map tells you where snow will fall. It does not tell you where snow will land during the morning bus window, or where a modest total will matter because it is arriving on top of an Arctic outbreak. Comparing the dot colours with the dot sizes shows you both at once.

Where the numbers come from

Opening this page makes a single batched request to Open-Meteo for every mapped city and scores each response with the same code that runs on the individual city pages. Nothing is precomputed or cached at build time, so the map reflects the forecast as it stands when you load it. What the map is not

It is not a snowfall forecast product, not an official warning map and not a closure announcement. It draws no coastlines, borders or roads, and it makes no claim to represent conditions between the plotted cities. School and transportation decisions belong to individual districts, boards and consortia, and the accuracy and limitations page is explicit about what the model cannot observe.

What does this snow day map actually show?

One live forecast request covering every published city, scored with the site's six published factors and plotted at each city's true relative position. Dot colour is the probability band and dot size reflects forecast snowfall. The same numbers appear in the table underneath, so nothing on the map is information you cannot read as text.

Why is there no satellite or street basemap?

Because adding one would mean introducing a paid tile service and a large third-party JavaScript dependency, both of which would slow the page down for no analytical gain. The graphic is drawn as plain inline geometry from the coordinates the site already stores, which keeps it fast and keeps the page honest about what it is: a data map, not a satellite view.

Why do all the cities show a low chance right now?

Most likely because there is no winter weather in the current forecast. Outside the snow season, and during mild spells within it, a low reading everywhere is the correct output rather than a broken one. The map states plainly when nothing on it is showing meaningful pressure.

Why does a city page sometimes show a different number?

The map fixes the local settings for every city — suburban area, elementary level, typical district tendency — so that a comparison across locations is like for like. A city page starts from the same forecast but lets you change those settings, and changing them moves the number.

Can I see a specific weekday on the map?

Yes. The day buttons above the map cover tomorrow plus the following four days, so you can look at a particular Monday or Thursday directly. Treat anything past about two days out as pattern awareness rather than a school forecast.

Does the map include official weather warnings?

No. Official alerts are location-specific and are shown on individual city pages for United States locations, with Canadian pages linking to Environment and Climate Change Canada. A comparison map is the wrong place to summarise warning text, so it deliberately does not try.
