A single state-wide snowfall figure rarely explains a school decision here. These are the patterns worth knowing before reading any New York forecast.

Two snowbelts, driven by two different lakes

Western and central New York sit downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. When cold air crosses open water, it picks up moisture and drops it inland as lake-effect snow. Erie is shallow and can freeze over during a sustained cold spell, which shuts its snow machine down; Lake Ontario is far deeper and usually stays open, so the Rochester and Tug Hill side of the state can keep producing bands much later in the season. That single difference is why Buffalo and Syracuse can have very different winters from one year to the next.

The Hudson Valley decides precipitation type, not totals

From Albany south through the mid-Hudson, the hard question is usually what falls rather than how much. Cold air drains down the valley and gets trapped against the Catskills, Berkshires and Adirondacks while milder air rides above it. The result is a narrow band of sleet and freezing rain that can sit over some districts while neighbours to the west get all snow and neighbours to the south get plain rain. Icing events here often disrupt transportation with very little accumulation.

Downstate storms are marginal and transit dependent

New York City, Long Island and the lower Hudson are close enough to the ocean that the rain-snow line frequently sets up over populated areas. A shift of thirty miles in a nor'easter track can turn a major snowfall into a cold rain. Downstate school operations also depend heavily on public transit and walking routes rather than yellow buses, so the practical question is often whether students and staff can travel safely, not whether plows can clear a rural road.

Terrain matters more than county lines

Elevation changes across short distances throughout the state. The Tug Hill Plateau northeast of Syracuse, the hills south of Buffalo, the Catskills and the Adirondacks all lift air and squeeze extra snow out of the same storm. Two districts twenty minutes apart can face genuinely different conditions, which is why the calculator asks for a specific location instead of a state.

Regional considerations to weigh

  • Lake-effect bands are narrow: a warning-level total for one district can be flurries for the next one over.
  • Late-season Lake Ontario events remain possible after Lake Erie has iced over.
  • Freezing rain in the Hudson Valley can close schools with almost no measurable snow.
  • Wind off the lakes reduces visibility and drifts snow back across roads that were already treated.
  • Downstate decisions weigh transit, sidewalks and staff commutes alongside snowfall.

Which New York cities close for snow most often?

There is no single answer, and this site does not publish closure counts it cannot verify. What is well established is that the snowbelt communities downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario see far more frequent snowfall than downstate, while also maintaining larger snow-clearing operations. Frequent snow and frequent closures are not the same thing.

Why does the forecast look identical for Buffalo and Rochester but the result differs?

The calculator uses coordinates rather than a regional average, so each city page requests its own forecast. Lake-effect bands are narrow enough that the modelled snowfall, overnight timing and wind can genuinely differ between two cities on the same day.

Does the calculator cover Long Island and the Adirondacks?

Who actually announces a New York school closure?
